Quick answer

KDP spine width is page count × page thickness: 0.002252 in on white paper, 0.0025 in on cream. The KDP cover size adds 0.125 in of bleed on every outside edge.

Formula: KDP cover width = 0.125 + trim width + spine + trim width + 0.125

How the KDP cover calculator works

A KDP paperback cover is one flat sheet that wraps around the book: back cover, spine and front cover side by side, with bleed around the outside edges. The trim size sets the two panels. The spine depends on how thick the book is, which comes from the page count and the paper. The KDP cover calculator adds those up the way KDP does, so the cover you upload matches the book KDP prints.

KDP cover width = 0.125 in bleed + trim width + spine + trim width + 0.125 in bleed. KDP cover height = 0.125 in bleed + trim height + 0.125 in bleed.

Spine width = page count × page thickness. The largest trim sizes allow fewer pages; KDP’s print options page lists the limit for each trim.

These are the KDP paperback sizes people pick most. KDP also prints custom trims from 4 to 8.5 in wide and 6 to 11.69 in tall, and the calculator takes any of them.

Designing on the KDP cover template

Keep text and logos inside the safe zone, 0.125 in inside the trim lines, and off the spine unless the book has 80 pages or more. Run backgrounds all the way into the bleed. The downloadable KDP cover template has the fold lines and safe zones drawn in, to use as a guide layer in any editor. “Design this cover” opens a cover editor on this page at the full wrap size, with the same guides, and exports a PDF with bleed for upload to KDP.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How do I use the KDP cover calculator?

Pick your trim size, type the page count and choose the ink and paper. The KDP cover calculator shows the full cover size with bleed, the spine width and the pixel size at 300 DPI. Download the KDP cover template or open the cover editor at that size.

Q: How do I calculate the spine width for a KDP paperback?

Multiply the page count by the thickness of one page for your paper: 0.002252 in for black and white on white paper or standard color, 0.0025 in for cream paper, and 0.002347 in for premium color. A 300-page book on white paper has a 0.6756 in spine.

Q: What is the KDP cover size for a 6 × 9 book?

KDP cover width is bleed + back cover + spine + front cover + bleed, and height is bleed + trim height + bleed, with 0.125 in of bleed. A 6 × 9 in book with 300 white pages needs a 12.9256 × 9.25 in cover, 3878 × 2775 px at 300 DPI.

Q: Where can I get a KDP cover template?

The calculator above makes one for your exact book: a 300 DPI PNG with the fold lines, bleed and safe zones drawn in. Use it as a guide layer, or design straight in the cover editor, which opens at the same size.

Q: When can I put text on the spine?

KDP prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages. Leave at least 0.0625 in between the text and each spine edge, because the fold can shift by that much either way.

Q: Does the paper type change the KDP cover size?

Yes. Cream paper is thicker than white, so the same page count gives a wider spine and a wider cover. A cover built for white paper and printed on cream comes out too narrow at the spine, so pick the paper before you design.
